There are various motor and gearbox drive configurations, however the most commonly used conveyor drive is the traditional external motor and gearbox mounted at 90-degrees to the head drive roller. A more efficient conveyor drive design, is the internally powered drum motor that houses all drive components inside the drum, has a 96% mechanical efficiency and addresses the mechanical losses experienced with traditional conveyor drive configurations. In addition, the VDG Permanent Magnet (PM) Drum Motor technology incorporated in the IntelliDrive™ offers advanced energy efficiency, longevity, and reliability.

An energy efficiency comparison study was conducted to measure energy consumption, performance, and overall energy costs between a traditional externally mounted motor/gearbox conveyor drive, and the VDG IntelliDrive™ PM Drum Motor. The study revealed significant energy savings, lower energy consumption, and increased motor performance with the conveyor powered by the IntelliDrive™. The all-enclosed, internally powered VDG IntelliDrive™ PM Drum Motor is highly efficient, has a lifespan of 80,000 hours before maintenance, a lower cost of ownership, and with no exposed moving components results in increased operator safety and a streamlined conveyor.

Energy Efficiency Comparison Study

The comparison study tested two conveyors each using a 1 hp electric motor mechanically connected to a load cell, with one using a traditional external motor/gearbox drive and the other using the internally powered VDG Intellidrive™ PM Drum Motor. Both drives were subjected to three test criteria and measured for energy consumption, torque, and annual energy costs.
